What Is Post-Grunge? The Genre, Explained

Post-grunge is the wave of heavy guitar rock that came after grunge burned out in the mid 90s. It kept the down-tuned riffs and the darker emotional register, but cleaned up the production and leaned into bigger, more melodic choruses. Where grunge was deliberately raw and sometimes hostile to polish, post-grunge made that same weight singable.

The core ingredients: thick, distorted guitars, quiet-verse loud-chorus dynamics, plainspoken lyrics about pain and struggle, and hooks built for shouting along. It became one of the most commercially successful rock sounds of the late 90s and 2000s, and one of the most argued-about, because purists heard the polish as a betrayal of what grunge stood for.

The label outlived the era. Streaming blurred the borders between scenes, and a lot of newer independent artists now pull post-grunge's weight and melody into songs that also borrow from emo and indie rock, without belonging to any one scene.
