The Story Behind "Fly Away"

"Fly Away" is about not wanting to be here anymore. It's the most direct song I've written about wanting to end it all, not feeling accepted, not feeling heard, not feeling loved, and just wanting the pain to stop.

I wrote it severely under the influence. I put the beat on and just started singing whatever I felt, no plan, no filter, letting it come out however it wanted to. "Bring me a bottle hand me a gun" and "I wanna die today" came out of those raw takes, and they weren't exaggerations, that's exactly where my head was in that moment.

Afterward I went back through everything I'd sung and shaped it into the song it is now, keeping the parts that were most true to how I actually felt. The rain and the gray in it are how everything looked from the inside of that.
